How Augmented and Virtual Reality will reshape the games we play together
Ric Edelman: It's Wednesday, June 21st. All last week, all this week, we're talking about video games. I don't even know why we're calling it video games. It's so much more than that. You know, we've got the same problem with crypto. It's a terrible name and not even accurate. Well, but I digress. We're not talking about crypto here.
We're talking about video gaming and video gaming. You go into, say, Fortnite, a video game, and you watch a top recording artist perform a concert. You're not playing a game. You're watching a concert. And if you're doing it with friends, isn't that a social event? Why are we calling it video games? One rapper who hosted a show called it an immersive sonic experience. Well, okay. We'll see if that name sticks.
25% of us adults under the age of 40 own a VR headset virtual reality headset. Consider this... The Walking Dead has been on TV for 13 years. Obviously, this is a highly popular, very successful TV series, if you like, you know, zombies. But it's now also an interactive experience on Facebook's video game platform. And users there determine how the story unfolds. You're not just passively watching a show, you're participating in it. Netflix is doing that to create interactive TV shows as well.
The next big platform is not just VR but are augmented reality. This is where we combine video with the real world. Apple CEO Tim Cook calls this profound. He says it's the next big tech platform. Games have always been a way for people to spend time with each other in the future. We're all going to be doing this digitally.
That's why you really need to embrace video gaming as a specific category in your diversified investment portfolio. It’s one of the biggest areas of exponential technologies. It's why I'm a fan of the Global X Video Games and Esports ETF. The symbol is HERO because in video games, well, yeah, we're all a hero. Learn about it at Global X ETFs.com or ask your financial advisor about investing in the video gaming industry.
