The Ancient Material That's Now a Billion-Dollar Business
Portugal's cork industry sets a new standard in sustainability and profit
Ric Edelman: It's Monday, April 29th. On today's show, it's an ancient material, and it's becoming a billion-dollar business. Have you ever uncorked a bottle of wine or popped a bottle of champagne? It's fun, isn't it? Well, when it works, anyway. I can't tell you how many times I've ended up with cork in the bottle. But I digress.
Cork has been around for about as long as wine has. Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, they all used it to make fishing gear, sandals. And of course, to seal jugs and jars and barrels. Cork is durable, it's waterproof, it's light, it's pliable. But what exactly is cork? Cork is a tree. Cork oak, actually. It's an evergreen tree, and it's all over the Mediterranean.
Portugal is the world's largest producer, and it's such a big deal that cork oak trees are the country's national tree. It's illegal to cut one down. Harvesting cork takes years of practice. You use an axe, and you've got to swing it hard because the tree is really strong. You've got to avoid hitting the inner bark, because that would damage the tree.
It's so difficult that it's one of the best paying agricultural jobs in Portugal. They harvest the cork between May and August every year. The tree's got an amazing ability to regenerate its bark. Every nine years, you can do another harvest. And after they cut the bark from the tree, they let it age for six months. Then they boil it to remove impurities. And at the same time, the cork becomes softer and easier to handle. There's nothing new here. The Greeks did all this thousands of years ago.
What's new is that the industry has figured out that cork is a great alternative to plastic. We're now seeing cork used for flooring and furniture, shoes and clothes, insulation in homes and electric cars. Yeah, insulation. The bark is really thick because it defends the tree against fire, and that makes it a great insulating material. It's used not just to shield batteries on electric vehicles, NASA uses it to shield the fuel tanks on spacecraft, and the whole time, cork is resistant to water and oil. You can compress it, and it maintains that springiness that we see when we pop a bottle of champagne.
So guess what? Portugal's exports hit an all-time high last year. Nearly a billion dollars of the stuff was shipped worldwide. It's not only a green material, the cork oak forests provide food and shelter for animals, captures carbon dioxide, and the trees are never cut down. They live for 200 years. And it's not just the cork that's used to make bottle stoppers. The waste is ground up and pressed to form sheets and blocks. Recycled cork. It's crushed to make other products.
You know, one of the coolest things about technological innovation is that we're using technology more and more to identify natural products that let our technology work better and cheaper while protecting the planet. This is a great example of why I'm so optimistic about our future. You should be too.
