UK Says this is the #1 Killer of Women
But there’s hope that breakthroughs are coming
Ric Edelman: It's Wednesday, June 26th. In the United Kingdom, they've just announced that the biggest killer is dementia. It's the leading cause of death for women since 2011. One in two are either going to get it, or they're going to find themselves caring for someone who does. We've been talking about Alzheimer's for a long time on this program, for decades, because it is the most expensive disease to treat because from symptoms to death is an average of 12 years. Patients typically require 24/7 care because they're ambulatory, and that means they need to be watched all the time to make sure that they don't harm themselves or others. And it is devastating because there's no diagnostic tool. There's no treatment, there's no cure, there's no vaccine. It's 100% fatal. And there has been up until recently, virtually no treatment available. There has been no drug on the market to serve you. And it has been financially devastating. And of course horribly devastating for the patient and their families from a physical, emotional, and medical position. And we've spent $30-40 billion in research and have come up with bupkis.
But now for the first time, we've got some optimism. We now have Donanemab, which is a drug that came onto the market last year that slows cognitive decline by a third. We now have more than 140 clinical trials underway around the world with lots of potential treatments.
But the key to all of this is early detection. And it's so vital that we pay attention to this while there's so much effort and research on treatments and cures and vaccines, detection is really key because what we have now learned, and there've been a number of studies on this, I've shared them with you over time on this podcast, that you can impact the likelihood you will develop symptoms of Alzheimer's, you can impact the severity of those symptoms, you can delay and reduce those symptoms. Without drugs, without modern medical science, all you need to do is take care of yourself. All of the things that everybody tells you to do to protect your heart is what you need to be doing to protect your brain. We're talking about diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and relationships. All of the things you know you're supposed to be doing anyway, if you just do those things, you will delay and reduce the impact of Alzheimer's.
Now we have a study from the New England Journal of Medicine that just came out that says the early stages of Alzheimer's can occur 20 years before the symptoms are detectable. This is why we've got to create the detection in a manner better than we have right now. Right now we have spinal taps and PET scans. You want to get a spinal tap? You want to pay for a PET scan? I didn't think so. And that's why only 2% of the population get them. In the United Kingdom, they've set a target to diagnose two-thirds of patients. They're a long way off from accomplishing that goal. Early detection matters.
And this is why I've been working, pretty much under the radar, behind the scenes in efforts; Jean and I own an Alzheimer's research company and we are working hard on the development of a diagnostic tool to create the detection, to alert you as to whether or not you are likely to develop Alzheimer's 10 years before symptoms are displayed. I'll have more on our research for you in coming months, but we are convinced that while it is vital that we come up with treatments and cures and vaccines, it all begins with detection. You can't solve a problem you don't know you have. And so we're focusing on the diagnosis and the detection of Alzheimer's. More to come on that. But we are enthused and excited about what's coming in the not-too-distant future.
And as I've been telling you all week, and I've got some exciting news for you on a different subject about Double VISION. So, you know that we've been promoting your availability to obtain access to Double VISION, the VISION conference we held earlier this month in Austin. It's really awesome. And a lot of folks have signed up to watch the videos. And what I've been telling you for the past two weeks is that you have to watch the videos by the end of June, that you only have two weeks and we are fast approaching the end of these two weeks. If you sign up now, it's just $24.99, gives you access to all 18 sessions, 10.5 CE credits if you were to watch all of them. What we're coming up to is the deadline and it's begun to occur to me gee willikers, if you sign up for Double VISION right now, you only have through the weekend to watch, and that's kind of a time pressure, isn't it? Especially with the 4th of July holiday coming up next week and so on. So, you know what we're gonna do? Here's what we're gonna do: if you sign up for Double VISION and you sign up by Sunday, which means over the next several days, we'll give you all the way to July 31st to watch the 18 sessions, or as many of them as you choose to watch. So, no more time pressure. We'll make it simple and easy for you, but you do have to sign up by the end of this week. So, all the info is in the show notes for you.
One of the examples of one of the sessions we have for you, The Convergence of Crypto and AI. On my panel, we had Lee Bratcher, the President of the Texas Blockchain Council, Ariel Seidman, the CEO and co-founder of Hivemapper, and Amanda Wick, the founder and CEO of The Association for Women in Crypto. So amazing sessions, incredible content. You'll be floored by the information. And I encourage you to sign up for Double VISION and you have all the until July 31 to watch all the sessions at your convenience. Hope you'll take advantage of it.
